March 2012 Newsletter

March 5, 2012

Dear Room 16 Parents/ Guardians,

It is hard to believe it is March. Time is flying, and we have been working on many subjects in Room 16.

Language Arts: We are about to finish up our unit on Sadako & the Thousand Paper Cranes. We began our literature circles last Thursday. The class started reading their chosen book, and is meeting once a week to discuss it. We had a lot of fun with the book clubs, and I am really looking forward to this unit.

Writer’s Workshop: We have been writing fables. We are also continuing to work on our responses to literature and summaries. Tomorrow, they will take the Star Writing Test.

Math: We are learning about Customary Units of Measurement as well as the Metric System. Next, we will tackle temperature and positive and negative numbers. We have also been working on building our logic skills.

Social Studies: We will begin to study why people came to California and the Gold Rush. We are beginning our Gold Rush Simulation in which students will pretend to be gold miners.

Science: Our next unit will be on Magnetism and Electricity.

Health & Nutrition: We are learning about eating healthy foods and getting exercise. We have been talking about balancing the fuel we put into our bodies with the energy that we burn during our daily activities.

P.E.: On Wednesdays and Thursdays, the students have been enjoying their unit on basketball. For more information on P.E., feel free to check the P.E. newsletter on the Dilworth website staff page.

Music: On Tuesdays, the students have been learning singing songs about the Gold Rush.

Space Assembly: Today, the students participated in a special assembly where they learned about the NASA Space Station, and spoke with astronauts on the space station. If your student is interested in more information about the space station, the West Coast Premiere of NASA’s Destination: Station Traveling Space exhibit is at the Tech Museum in San Jose through Sunday, April 8.
