June Newsletter
Dear Room 16 Parents/ Guardians,
Where did the year go? It’s hard to believe summer break is just around the corner. Here are a few end of year reminders.
Field Trips: We still have two field trips left! Monday, June 4, we will visit the Intel Museum. Friday, June 8th, we will have our class picnic at Murdock Park.
Books: Please return all books that have been brought home from our class library. They will have a sticker in them that says, “This belongs to Mrs. Horner.”
E-books: If you checked out a Math E-book at the beginning of the year, please return it to school.
Last Day of School: The last day of school is Tuesday, June 12, 2012. Students will be dismissed at 11:50 a.m. Lunch will be served early (at recess) for those who are having hot lunch.
Thank you for a great school year. We have learned a lot and had fun while doing it. It has been a pleasure getting to know, and working with each of the students.

May 2012 Newsletter

Dear Room 16 Parents/ Guardians,
It is hard to believe we are getting so close to the end of the school year. We have been working very hard in Room 16.
Language Arts: We are continuing to read, Island of the Blue Dolphins. We are working in our groups and discussing the book.
Writer’s Workshop: We have been busy writing many different poems for our poetry booklet. We have been typing up our poetry in the Computer Lab. The poetry booklet is due on May 23, 2012. We are also working on writing an informative report on an animal. The students have selected an animal and have been researching the animal at school. They are using books, encyclopedias, and the Internet to find research. The report is also due on May 23, 2012.
Math: We have been studying Geometry. We took a test today on polygons, angles, symmetry, and congruent figures. Next, we will continue to work on perimeter and area. The have also been creating a geometry dictionary which is due on May 16th.
Social Studies: The class has learned about how California became a state, immigration to California, and California’s government. We will be having a Social Studies test on Thursday, May 10th. After that, we will learn about California’s role in the 20th Century.
Science: We are continuing our unit on Magnetism & Electricity as we explore circuits. The students have been making open and closed circuits in class. Their Science test and notebooks will be due on May 31st.
Open House: Open House is May 24th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. We hope you can stop by and visit our room during this time.

Dear Room 16 Parents/ Guardians,
April has arrived. We have been working hard on many subjects in Room 16.
Language Arts: We have started our unit on Island of the Blue Dolphins. Our literature circles are coming to an end, and the students will be making a group project to share with the class on their book. Many thanks to the parents who have been able to join us during our “book clubs.” The students and I have enjoyed your company.
Writer’s Workshop: We have been writing poems. We are working on a poetry booklet. The students are using their creativity and figurative language in their poetry.
Math: We have just finished a unit on fractions, and are learning about decimals. We have been spending some time working on probability and graphing. I would like to thanks the volunteers that came in to help us on our probability stations day. The students had a lot of fun and learned a lot during our rotations.
Social Studies: We are finishing up our Gold Rush Simulation, and looking forward to our Upcoming Gold Rush Day! Thank you in advance to our volunteers and for the donations for the Gold Rush Lunch. After that, we will discuss why people came to California.
Science: We have started our unit on Magnetism and Electricity. The students have been investigating magnets and the force. Next, we will begin building circuits.
P.E.: On Wednesdays and Thursdays, the students have been finishing up their fitness assessments. For more information on P.E., feel free to check the P.E. newsletter on the Dilworth website staff page.
Life Long Learning Skills: We having been working on our problem solving and conflict resolution skills. We recently had a presentation and group discussion on bullying. Please remind your student if they feel they are being bullied to come to an adult so that we can help them with it.

March 2012 Newsletter

Dear Room 16 Parents/ Guardians,
It is hard to believe it is March. Time is flying, and we have been working on many subjects in Room 16.
Language Arts: We are about to finish up our unit on Sadako & the Thousand Paper Cranes. We began our literature circles last Thursday. The class started reading their chosen book, and is meeting once a week to discuss it. We had a lot of fun with the book clubs, and I am really looking forward to this unit.
Writer’s Workshop: We have been writing fables. We are also continuing to work on our responses to literature and summaries. Tomorrow, they will take the Star Writing Test.
Math: We are learning about Customary Units of Measurement as well as the Metric System. Next, we will tackle temperature and positive and negative numbers. We have also been working on building our logic skills.
Social Studies: We will begin to study why people came to California and the Gold Rush. We are beginning our Gold Rush Simulation in which students will pretend to be gold miners.
Science: Our next unit will be on Magnetism and Electricity.
Health & Nutrition: We are learning about eating healthy foods and getting exercise. We have been talking about balancing the fuel we put into our bodies with the energy that we burn during our daily activities.
P.E.: On Wednesdays and Thursdays, the students have been enjoying their unit on basketball. For more information on P.E., feel free to check the P.E. newsletter on the Dilworth website staff page.
Music: On Tuesdays, the students have been learning singing songs about the Gold Rush.
Space Assembly: Today, the students participated in a special assembly where they learned about the NASA Space Station, and spoke with astronauts on the space station. If your student is interested in more information about the space station, the West Coast Premiere of NASA’s Destination: Station Traveling Space exhibit is at the Tech Museum in San Jose through Sunday, April 8.

February 2012 Newsletter
Dear Room 16 Parents/ Guardians,
It is hard to believe that is already February! It has been so nice to be working with your students again, as they are insightful, friendly, and bright. We have been working on many subjects in Room 16.
Language Arts: We have just finished reading our second theme, American Stories. We have started reading Sadako & the Thousand Paper Cranes. We will be beginning literature circles soon. Our next book report is due on Friday, February 10th. The students are to read the book, choose a setting, and create a brochure about one of the settings in the story.
** I am looking for a few more volunteers to come in and help out with our upcoming literature circles. Please let me know if you are interested. This would be a six-week commitment for about 30 minutes once a week in class. The circles will meet on Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and would start on Thursday, March 1st.
Writer’s Workshop: We have been working on summaries and responses to literature. After we review Literature Responses, we will begin writing a new narrative story. We are continuing to work on our responses to literature, summaries, and narratives as we continue to prepare for the upcoming Star Writing Test on March 6, 2012.
Math: This week, we are continuing our unit on long division. We will have a Chapter 12 test on Tuesday, February 7th. Next, we will begin studying prime numbers, composite numbers, and factors. We have also been working on building our logic skills.
Social Studies: We are studying the California Missions. The students our working on a project on the missions where they will create a PowerPoint Presentation to present to the class on one of the California Missions. Next, we will begin to study why people came to California and the Gold Rush.
Science: We are continuing to study rocks in our Solid Earth unit. We have been conducting experiments with vinegar to look for evidence of Calcite in rocks. Our Science Notebooks and test will be on February 29th.
P.E.: On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the students have been enjoying their unit on soccer. For more information on P.E., feel free to check the P.E. newsletter on the Dilworth website staff page.
Valentine’s Day Party: We will be having a Valentine’s Day Party on February 14th. It will take place in the afternoon. Please remember if you student wishes to bring valentines they need to bring one for every student. A list of class names will be sent home so that we avoid any hurt feelings.
Google Group: It has come to my attention that some parents have still not had a chance to join our google group. If you haven’t, please join us by visiting my blog and clicking the link to join our group. The group is a private group, so when you ask to join it will send me a request to approve you.
