November Newsletter

November 4, 2011

Dear Room 16 Parents/ Guardians,

Thank you for all of your support last week for our Halloween Celebration. The students really enjoyed the time to celebrate and have fun.

It’s hard to believe it is already November! We have been working on many things in Room 16.

Language Arts: Last week the students shared their Reader’s Theatre “Spooky Plays” with the class. This week, they have been presenting their book reports to the class. We are continuing our literature unit on the book In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson. The students are enjoying reading the book while they work with reading strategies, learn vocabulary, and work together.

Math: We just fished our chapter on the Order of Operations, Equations, and Expressions. We are starting to work on solving equations and expressions with variables.

Social Studies: We are studying California’s Native Americans. The students are working on a group project where they are researching a specific tribe, making a poster, and will present their poster to the class.

Science: We finished our unit on Environments. Our next unit will be Solid Earth and begin the week of November 28th. The students will be studying rocks and minerals in this unit.

Too Good For Drugs: The students are working on a unit called Too Good For Drugs to teach them goal setting, how to make good choices, and to stay away from drugs and alcohol.

Music: The students have been learning songs. They are working with the musical instruments and singing at the same time. They enjoy attending Music every Tuesday.

You should be receiving a letter today from Ms. Matala about my long-term sub, Mr. McGee. He and I along with the Dilworth staff are currently working together to make next week’s transition days (Wednesday and Thursday) and his time with the class as smooth possible. I know he will do a great job, and that he is really looking forward to working with the class. Ms. Matala is hosting a Welcome Coffee/ Tea for him next Thursday. It is for parents only.

Some Up Coming Events:

• November 10th – Welcome Mr. McGee Coffee/ Tea in Conference Room 8:15-8:25 a.m.

• November 11th - Veteran’s Day – No School

• November 21st – 25th – Thanksgiving Break – No School
