March Newsletter

March 2, 2010

Dear Room 16 Parents/ Guardians,

It is hard to believe that is already March! We have been working very hard in Room 16.

Language Arts: We have started reading our next book, Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. We are finishing up our first session of literature circles. The students are finishing reading the book their group has selected and will begin to prepare for a presentation about their book to share with the class.

Writer’s Workshop: The students worked very hard during the Star Writing test this past Tuesday. We have started writing fables to work on adding an author’s purpose to our writing. Next, we will write creative narratives.

Math: We have started our seventh unit. We are currently studying units of measurement and focusing on customary units as well as the metric system. Next, we will study temperature and positive and negative numbers.

Social Studies: The class has been working on their Mission PowerPoint Presentations. We will be sharing these with the class. Our next major unit will be on the California Gold Rush. On March 8th the students will take a test on California Native Americans and Missions.

Science: We have finished studying Magnetism and Electricity. Next, we will begin studying Environments.

Music: In Music, the students are studying music from California's history in preparation for their April 13th concert. The music includes sea chanties (sung by those who sailed to California), Gold Rush songs, and railroad songs. They even have a 1920s style Hollywood number!

Yearbook Pictures: If you have pictures from events earlier in the year that you would like to share, please email them to me. I am collecting photos for our yearbook. Thank you for sending the photos.

Some Up Coming Events:

• March 5th – Immigration Field Trip
• March 14th – Staff Learning Day – No School for Students
• March 18th – Report Cards are sent home
• March 31st – Hidden Villa Field Trip

The Books and Beyond Program round two is underway. Please continue to encourage your student to keep track of all of the pages they are reading to participate in the program.

If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me at school or via e-mail, at horner_sabrina@cusdk8.org.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Horner
